Working in Harmony with the Environment and Local Communities
Our environmental commitments

Sustainability Initiatives

At The Okura Tokyo, we believe in harmony between people, communities, and the environment

All Okura Nikko Hotels are acutely aware of their social responsibility, and The Okura Tokyo is deeply committed to maintaining harmony with the natural environment. This means championing local communities and promoting cultural understanding based on the group’s philosophy of ‘kindness and harmony’.

We believe that our responsible business activities will lead to us becoming a hotel loved by the community and will also contribute to the wider adoption of sustainable development goals (SDGs) across the world.

SAKURA QUALITY

In March 2023, The Okura Tokyo received a 4/5 rating in the Sakura Quality: An ESG Practice certification system, which recognizes hotels that practice the UN’s SDGs. This certification’s standards have been approved by the GSTC.

As the flagship hotel of the group of Okura Nikko Hotels, The Okura Tokyo is proud to promote the initiatives below.

Our Environmental Initiatives
These initiatives allow us to work in harmony with the environment and with local communities

The Okura Tokyo has Recently Been Reborn as an Environmentally Friendly Hotel

The original Okura Tokyo was completed in 1962 but it was then rebuilt before resuming operations in 2019. This completely new building with its premium amenities and facilities incorporates the latest environmentally aware technology:

  • We use a building energy-management system (BEMS) to ensure that the hotel, offices, and art museum are all heated efficiently
  • We recoup heat from the climate-control system and drainage water from the kitchen and pool that would otherwise be wasted
  • We use rainwater and water from wells in everyday operations
  • We have introduced energy-saving measures such as LED lighting, sensor-activated lights, computer-linked air-conditioning controls, heat-exchange systems for outside air and exhaust air, and insulated glazing
  • We use domestically produced wood and thinned wood for our interiors

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • We have switched the straws, caps, and cutlery served in Chef’s Garden from plastic to paper and wood
  • We now respond to individual requests from guests staying for consecutive nights over when to change their sheets and towels
  • We have started asking guests to take used bathroom products like shampoo and conditioner with them when they leave
  • We now recycle paper/card key holders into new forms of packaging
  • The bags lining the trash cans in our guest rooms contain 25% limestone, which reduces the use of petroleum-derived resin by up to 34% compared with conventional plastic bags
  • We have significantly reduced our use of pamphlets and paper, as well as recycling more paper, increasing our use of recycled paper, and promoting digitization of all forms and documents

Introducing Green Spaces as Part of our Environmental Policy

We maintain a large park that covers about half the total area of The Okura Tokyo site. Trees and plants have been arranged in this beautiful green space to focus the breeze and create cooler areas for guests to enjoy.

Sourcing and Handling our Food Supply

  • Our Okura beef has been raised on a designated ranch to ensure sustainable production and consumption. We champion waste-free consumption and transparent agricultural-production process management
  • We now use a food-waste-disposal machine that breaks down waste into water and carbon dioxide on site without the need for transporting it or burning it
  • We serve International Fairtrade-certified coffee in our restaurants and guest rooms, as well as Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee at our banquets and in our meeting rooms

Cultural Promotion Initiatives
We support young musicians through our Lobby Concert 25, as well as other cultural institutions

Our social contribution and continuing Mécénat activities

When the hotel reopened in 2019, we were proud to incorporate environmentally aware systems and programs into our operations. As well as these initiatives, we also focused on promoting wider cultural activities, including Lobby Concert 25. We held our first free event in 1987 to mark the hotel’s 25th anniversary. The concerts now give the next generation of musical talent a platform to showcase their incredible ability to the world. Since 1996, we have presented some of the finest musicians with the Hotel Akura Music Award, an incentive system that aims to support their careers in the arts.

Traditional Japanese Craft Exhibition

Ever since the hotel reopened, we have exhibited traditional Japanese arts and crafts (Takumi of Japan) from the country’s 47 prefectures. They can now be found in more that 100 places throughout the hotel, mostly in the corridors outside the guest rooms.

Appropriation of Mécénat Activity Funds

Donations received from our Mécénat activities are distributed to important cultural causes and artistic initiatives. Since 2017, the main recipient has been The Okura Tokyo Cultural Fund.
