At The Okura Tokyo, we believe in harmony between people, communities, and the environment
All Okura Nikko Hotels are acutely aware of their social responsibility, and The Okura Tokyo is deeply committed to maintaining harmony with the natural environment. This means championing local communities and promoting cultural understanding based on the group’s philosophy of ‘kindness and harmony’.
We believe that our responsible business activities will lead to us becoming a hotel loved by the community and will also contribute to the wider adoption of sustainable development goals (SDGs) across the world.
In March 2023, The Okura Tokyo received a 4/5 rating in the Sakura Quality: An ESG Practice certification system, which recognizes hotels that practice the UN’s SDGs. This certification’s standards have been approved by the GSTC.
As the flagship hotel of the group of Okura Nikko Hotels, The Okura Tokyo is proud to promote the initiatives below.
The original Okura Tokyo was completed in 1962 but it was then rebuilt before resuming operations in 2019. This completely new building with its premium amenities and facilities incorporates the latest environmentally aware technology:
We maintain a large park that covers about half the total area of The Okura Tokyo site. Trees and plants have been arranged in this beautiful green space to focus the breeze and create cooler areas for guests to enjoy.
When the hotel reopened in 2019, we were proud to incorporate environmentally aware systems and programs into our operations. As well as these initiatives, we also focused on promoting wider cultural activities, including Lobby Concert 25. We held our first free event in 1987 to mark the hotel’s 25th anniversary. The concerts now give the next generation of musical talent a platform to showcase their incredible ability to the world. Since 1996, we have presented some of the finest musicians with the Hotel Akura Music Award, an incentive system that aims to support their careers in the arts.
Ever since the hotel reopened, we have exhibited traditional Japanese arts and crafts (Takumi of Japan) from the country’s 47 prefectures. They can now be found in more that 100 places throughout the hotel, mostly in the corridors outside the guest rooms.
Donations received from our Mécénat activities are distributed to important cultural causes and artistic initiatives. Since 2017, the main recipient has been The Okura Tokyo Cultural Fund.
